Sunday With Lilacs

May 28, 2008 / by donnamg

Sunday, day two of my long weekend, was what I like to call a bookend day.  How the day ended was similar to the way it started, with something completely different in the middle.

Edie had to work from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and I had a housecleaning job from 1:00 to 4:00, so I brought Edie to work in order to keep the car for my own needs.  It was such a beautiful morning that, after dropping Edie off at the store, I decided to visit the state park here in town instead of going directly home.  I discovered that the Garden of Lilacs was in bloom and it was breathtaking!  I snapped a few pictures in that perfect morning light because it was a sight too beautiful not to capture.

I did head home, do a few chores, and then went to the housecleaning job.  That took up my afternoon, but it went along smoothly and, to me, rather quickly.  I knew at that point that I HAD to go back to the park and see those lilacs again!  And, I KNEW Edie HAD to be with me because lilacs are her favorite flowers and she had never seen anything like this garden before!

After picking Edie up, I told her we were going for a little ride.  Of course, she wanted to know where we were going, but all I told her was that there was something so special in such a beautiful place that I wanted to take her there to share it with her.  She insisted on knowing more, but I insisted that I didn't want anything to be spoiled by any advance notice but, if I could, this was the sort of place and thing that I could never buy for her but an experience I could give to her.

We arrived at the entrance and she could see how it was bordered by other flowering trees and shrubs and thought it was already too beautiful to behold, but when I turned into the parking area and she could see into the garden itself, she was more than happy.  Before I even had the car locked, she was over the stonewall (she couldn't take the time to walk around it to the path) and in the garden with the lilacs all around her.

I caught up to her and we strolled toward the "real" entrance, checking out the different flowering plants around the perimeter of the garden. Then we walked into the garden itself, taking in every color of every lilac at ever angle in the garden.  The sunlight, now later in the day, tended to "bleach out" some of the color but Edie thought Mother Nature had created the most perfect place for her to be.  The rest of this post consists entirely of the pictures we took that afternoon.

The smell was the other intense thing in that garden.  I could explain and show some of the visual, but we were also surrounded by that beautiful smell.

I first searched in my dictionary for Lilac to see If it was the thing I thought it was and..yes. Great pics of them Donna. I can imagine how it will smell all together. Must have been a day to remember!

Edie looks the picture of complete contentment! I have one lilac bush and planted another this spring. I'm with Edie--lilacs are so very soothing and so very beautiful!

I love lilacs. I could smell them from your beautiful pictures! I picked a clump the other day and gave them to my two-year old. He carried them around for an hour - much longer than any toy lasts in his hands!

itsjustme...It was glorious!  I think we will always remember the day, regardless of how many times we might get to do it again.  It was that special.

Angie...it's so nice to see you!  Oh, the garden really is beautiful...you would love it!  We took a ride by it today and it is still in bloom, although the other flowering plants around it have now dropped their flowers and are in full leaf.

Cami, I think the clusters are so beautiful and, up close, each individual flower is so delicate.  We took a lot more pictures than what I posted here and the coloring is awesome.  It makes me smile when I see children carrying flowers.  For some reason, kids love them.  Another childlike thing that so many adults forget to bring with them into adulthood.

I'm trying to learn from my kids. The number one thing is - slow down and enjoy each adventure, even - no especially the messes!

I so wish I could visit there too. Beautiful pictures, and what a beautiful thing to do for Edie. It goes to show that gifts of love needn't cost money!

That's a beautiful picture of Edie.

My mother thought lilac's were a jinx, but that's  story she won't apprieciate me posting
