Know the Laws!

With summer quickly approaching, many people will be traveling on vacation or visiting friends and loved ones.  With the economy being as it is and the high cost of travel, there may be a lot of people staying right here in the USA.  And, if anyone from outside of the country plans to visit here, this post will apply to you, too.

This may be one big country, but each state has it's own set of laws.  On top of that, each city has it's own set of laws.  And, we all know that "ignorance of the law is no excuse", so you may want to check out what's "on the books" for each destination and for whatever areas you may visit or pass through en route.

Most laws that exist pertain to serious and more obvious matters, but it is important to remember that every and any law "on the books" can (and might) be enforced!  So, brush up on the laws before you leave home to avoid any possible surprises.  Here are some examples of what I am talking about...

1.  If you're in North Carolina and you're thinking of maybe a night of playing bingo, you may have to shop around a bit because, in North Carolina it is illegal to hold more than two sessions of bingo per week, and those sessions may not exceed 5 hours each session.

2.  If you are in New York City and you'd like to go somewhere to have a nice dinner and do some dancing, keep in mind that no dancing is allowed at any dining establishment in NYC unless the establishment also has a cabaret license.

3.  If you're in the fine state of Nebraska and you're thinking you'd like to stop at a tavern for an ice cold beer, you had better make sure the tavern also serves soup because no beer can be served in a tavern that doesn't also serve soup.

4.  In some states, such as California, Florida, Nevada, Alaska, and Hawaii, a motorist can be cited for driving too slowly.  So, keep your speed up!

5.  In the city of Ottumwa, Iowa, it is illegal for any man to wink at any woman he is not acquainted with.

6.  It is recommended that visitors be very careful in Ocean City, New Jersey, because there are a number of tough laws in place.  Make note that it is illegal for a men to go topless in the center of town, the only legal beverage allowed on the beach is water, and it is illegal to eat in the street in any residential neighborhood.

Remember, awareness of the laws can spare you from the consequences!

Some of these are amazing. The last one about eating in the street in a residential area is odd. Health issues--sanitation?????

Now if I was walking topless with a beer and a hot dog in Ocean City they would lock me up and throw away the key!!! LOL

I love to read about quirky laws!  They are always so interesting.

Nice way to present these lists, I'm haveing fun reading them this way. You make them so much more fun! thanks!!

Angie, I have no idea! My first thought is sanitation...more precisely, litter problems.  Being near the ocean, there are a lot of neighborhoods that get traveled through to get to the beach...trash in the street can be quite ugly, it can draw in vermin (rats, maybe?), and can lead to even another messy nuisance known as hungry seagulls.  But, I have no idea if there is the real reason.

You're right, Martin! But, did you notice that there was no mention of illegality for women to be topless? Hmmmmmmmm....

AJ, they are so funny sometimes, almost makes you scratch your head at some.

Ana, I love some of the lists I come across, but sometimes they start becoming "oh, no, not another list".  So, I just try to present them a little differently.  Thank you for making me feel like it's worth doing this way.

Every state has its quirky laws.  There is actually a web-site dedicated just to them.  I have posted some in the past.  They are hilarious.

Yeah, Joan, I'm familiar with the site (there may be more than one) and I've quoted a few in the past, too, some that are on the books right here in this little state.  Matter of fact, I did an entire post on RI's quirky laws, so there's no excuse if you ever come here and let your horse run down certain streets or if you decide to jump off certain bridges. lol

    Geez!  You're no fun!!

Thx sharing. This year no money left to visit your country (poor me).

Robin, I don't even have enough money to visit my country!

Joan, whaddya mean I'm no fun!?! There are other streets your horse can run down and there are plenty of other bridges that are ok to jump off, so it's not all that strict here!  Heck, maybe we could get together and break one of the quirky laws, like maybe we WILL share our fries in that town that doesn't allow that "sort of thing"...and do it just for the fun of it! (And I won't care if there's a cop around or not!)   uh oh >>>
