Job Options for Early Birds and Night Owls

February 5, 2008 / by donnamg

A lot of people are simply not cut out for a 9 to 5 job.  Consider this scenario...

Your alarm goes off, maybe after the third time you've hit the snooze button.  You drag yourself out of bed and pour yourself a cup of coffee, which you basically drink with your eyes closed.  You make your way into the shower and await the awakening the water and lather will induce.  You now hurriedly, almost frantically finish your bathroom routine, get dressed, maybe grab a coffee to go, grab your purse or briefcase, scoop up your keys, and rush off to work, getting there just in the nick of time!

You take your rightful place in the workplace and that's when your bubbly co-worker cheerfully wishes you a good morning and has the most energetic stream of dialogue for you.  You wonder how anybody could possibly be so wide awake and full of energy as you try to get your work day started.  From the dialogue you discover that the co-worker has been up for hours, dropped off the kids and some dry cleaning on the way to work, got to work early and had a quick breakfast in the cafeteria over the morning newspaper.

By the end of the work day, your co-worker has announced a real desire to get home.  Exhausted, he/she will have dinner, relax in front of the TV with a book or magazine, and maybe call it a night long before the 11:00 news.  You, on the other hand, can't wait to get out of work because you are going to the gym.  Then you have plans to meet some friends at a local restaurant for some good food and some drinks.  You're hoping that one of the friends will be inviting all back to his place for a night of poker, just like the last time you all got together.  If the night goes well, you might get home about 2:00 AM.  If not, then you already plan to return home and finish laying the tiles in the family room or start working on your taxes.

This is an example of why some people are not necessarily cut out for a 9 to 5 job.  There are people who are early risers, who have most of their energy in the earlier times of the day.  And, then, there are those who are wide awake at the end of the day, with little or no desire or energy to rise before noon.  For those who fall in one of these categories, there may be a job more suitable to their/your personal body clock.  More suitability means more energy and productivity, which is generally more satisfying.

I have always been my best late in the day.  Have never been a "morning" person, though I was always forced to rise early for the 8 to 5 job.

If I HAVE TO exude energy in the morning, I'm all tuckered out by 3:00 PM.  But, if I can drag until I'm ready to go, watch out!  I can go for the rest of the day, past midnight, and until who knows when.

I'm an early riser and a retired school teacher. The elementary schedule begins at 7:30 in some schools. Look at the salaries. Education does not seem to be a guarantee for an adequate compensation.Wink

No, the compensation is not great for teachers.  Compensation aside, though, the working hours may be more of a liking for some people AND they may enjoy teaching, as well.

Thx god Teaching salary is much higher here. I earn about 50.000 euro (about 65000 dollar). Why are the teachinfg salary so low there with you?

It's not quite understood why teachers are so very much underpaid here.  There are plenty of jobs that guarantee higher salaries.  Teachers (and nurses) are among those who are not adequately compensated for the work they do.

I suppose that the majority of people think that the job we do isn't important, difficult enough or the hours long enough. We are also considered public servants--we are supposed to be dedicated enough that money shouldn't matter. Well, I worked very long hours in preparation and in grading papers and spent all summer updating lesson plans and curriculum guide; the school and the kids became most of my life for 25 years. I loved teaching, but would like to see more repect go to the position.

And that was one of the many reasons I loved being a waiter--I basically chose my own hours (generally the 4-9 or 5-11 shift) made money, could party all night and sleep late in the AM!!!

Right!  And you still prefer to sleep late, right?  You probably don't really get going until sometime after noon time, but you have the whole day and night ahead of you.  I know people who PREFER their third shift job...they not only have the energy, but claim there's less stress during those hours.  I like afternoon jobs that end by 7 PM or 3rd shift jobs that start the later the better.
