G L A A D Awards Winners

April 30, 2008 / by donnamg

Two ABC series were winners at the 19th annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards (GLAAD), which honors good work in media presentations of gays and lesbians.

The two series, "Brothers & Sisters" and "Ugly Betty" received awards for outstanding drama and comedy series at the Kodak Theatre on Saturday night.  Both shows, which feature openly gay or transsexual regular characters, received the same awards last year from GLAAD.

***********************************************************

Other winners included Bravo's "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" for outstanding reality program,

Janet Jackson for the Vanguard Award,

and Rufus Wainwright for the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, in honor of the late casting director who fought homophobia in the entertainment industry.

**************************************************************

The awards annually honor individuals and projects in media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.

The awards are divided into four different ceremonies, which are held in New York City (Marriott Marquis on March 17), Miami (Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 12), Los Angeles (Kodak Theather on April 26), and San Francisco (San Francisco Marriott on May 10).  A total of 40 awards will be presented in all.

**************************************************************

A Special Note:

In March GLAAD announced an exclusive agreement with Bravo, its new broadcast partner, to telecast the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The broadcast date has been set for June 27.  The national media advocacy organization has presented the GLAAD Media Awards annually since 1990, but this will be the first televised airing of the celebration on a fully distributed national cable network. Tune in and watch history being made!

    Nice happy looking picks.

Question. "If" couples should have their sexuality classed into groups based on the gender of their partner. Why do men in the same gender relationship get the prettiest name? Lesbian is such an unattractive name. Why can't women be gay too.

You know, I really don't know the answer to that.  I thought I could answer you, but I'm not sure if I know the facts...so even my opinions and assumptions could be way off base.

I do know that homosexual men do not generally find discomfort with the title "gay", where there are very strong mixed and anti feelings for other titles that may be used.  (Many do not object if certain other titles are being used by people and organizations known to be friends and supporters because they then know that the titles are not direct terms of hate or to be offensive.)  I also know that people in general (male, female, homosexual, straight, media, politicians, teens, etc.) tend to feel more comfort using the word "gay" and will automatically use it as a referencing term.

Women, on the other hand, pose a problem when it comes to discussing the comfort level of the word "lesbian".  I know of a number of women (including homosexual women) who hate the word, hate being called by that title, or just simply do not particularly like it.  Then there are women (again, both homosexual and heterosexual) who don't have a problem with it at all.  But, except in certain instances, no other title is considered non-offensive.  Most, though, do not object to being "lumped in" with the title of "gay", many lesbians identify themselves as gay, and there are a lot of people in general (similar to the list I used in the previous paragraph) who find more comfort and will automatically use the word "gay" when referring to lesbians.  (So, the answer to your last question is, in a sort of a way lesbians are gay, too, when the title/word is being used as a "substitute" or a collective term, although the proper title remains "lesbian".)

Sorry my reply is so long, but this was the best I could do in trying to address your comment.

It's a pity we need such titles in the first place. Frown

Personally labels offend me. I don't like to be labeled, "senior" or "obese" "Dego (Day-go)" or anything else. That to me is a  separatist consciousness. Setting people apart, boxing people in nice little boxes, stereotype all that is for me the same.

Even before politically correct became a term. I grew up in Chicago with all different people, I worked 30 years in a beauty salon, doing hair for all types of people.

Recently I was asked "so what was it like to be raised with Europeans?"  I had to think about what the heck he meant. I than responded, they were all neighbors. I never thought of them in any other way!

My 2 cents has been added..
