Do You Know These Medicinal Helpers?

There are a number of herbs, plants, and spices out there that have medicinal qualities.  Can you identify these few examples?

                            

1.  This can be used as a liver or kidney tonic, as a diuretic, and for minor digestive problems.  It's leaves can be eaten raw.  It can be made into wine.

                                         

2.  This is used to prevent dental plaque and to treat urinary tract infections.

                                   

3.  This is primarily used for laxatives.  It is thought to ease menopausal hot flashes and to have some benefits to people with heart disease.  In it's pure form, it can be eaten in salads, besides being ground and/or mixed into batters.

                                        

4.  Used as a spice, this will treat heartburn, stomach ulcers and gallstones.  It can also be made into a paste and applied directly on the skin to treat eczema.

                                             

5.  Used in cooking, this eases motion sickness and nausea caused by chemotherapy.  It is also used to treat joint and muscle pain.

                                                  

6.  This is a well-known cooking ingredient that comes from the lily family.  It is used to treat high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, and also to help prevent stomach and colon cancers.

    Ok #1 is dandle lying's, #2 is little red berries, #3 is used water melon seeds, #4 is grass (mary u wanna), #5 is something that has been run over and lost a leg, #6 is vampires breathe.   How did I do?

    Use that garlic, don't be shy about the ginger, find some cranberries, don't be too harsh on those dandelions!  AJ, it's all for your health!

    Cami, I was quite interested when I was reading about all the helpful benefits from a large number of herbs, spices, and other plants.  I condensed the information for the post, but it's amazing how many good natural things there are that we can use.  I knew about some (some mentioned here and some in the larger article) because my grandmother used a lot of these things...and explained why...but there were some I didn't know about.

    ever read the Dr Vogel journal...? google for dr Vogel, he used a lot of herbs and flowers for medical things.

    Oh, no, they are not poisonous if prepared/used the right way.  (Like tapioca...it's poisonous but, when prepared the right way, it's not only a pudding but is often used as a thickening agent in foods.
