I really should have gone Christmas shopping tonight because time is quickly running out. But, the St. Jean Baptiste Church Choir was giving a free concert tonight at their church. My mother sings in that choir that generally only gets to sing during weekend masses so, therefore, seldom ever gets any other exposure. Once a year, though, they do perform in concert just before Christmas.
I opted to go to the concert instead of shopping. The choir, made up of about 20 people, looked so nice in their long green choir robes as they performed some traditional carols. They soon removed their robes to display their "winter outdoors" look and clustered into little groups near the candle-lit lamp posts that were on the stage. (The stage was actually the large landing in front of the altar.) This is when they sang some light-hearted holiday and seasonal songs, such as Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls.
As a narrator spoke of the true meaning of Christmas and how the beauty of the special day is expressed through music, the choir donned their robes again and made a procession up the center aisle, up the stairs and to the choir loft. The audience was treated to a listening experience that was beautiful and emotionally stirring.
O Holy Night, which was partially sung in French before changing over to English, flowed silk-like as the choir was accompanied by a harp and flute. The Star Carol featured such wonderfully blended harmonies as an acoustic guitar played ever so softly in the background. He Is Born (The Child Divine) was performed entirely in French and was done quite well.
Each carol kept building in volume and intensity. The final numbers were absolutely spectacular! The pipe organ was played by the church organist with such power as the choir sang Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Joy to the World with so much enthusiasm and energy that the church pews were vibrating and I could feel goosebumps all over my body!
I know I should have tried to get more shopping done tonight, but I sure am happy that I chose to go to this concert instead!
