Barbaro to Be Interred At Churchill Downs

January 29, 2008 / by donnamg

Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby Champion, who was euthanized in January 2007 because of complications of a breakdown suffered at the Preakness, will have his ashes interred at Churchill Downs. The remains will be placed outside of an entrance gate in an elevated space that will be enclosed by bricks. and will include a bronze statue and a bronze marker. The memorial site will be formally dedicated in 2009.

Churchill Downs was selected as the best place to honor the colt who had won the Derby by 6-1/2 lengths before being injured at the Preakness two weeks later.

Barbaro will be the first Kentucky Derby winner to be buried on the grounds of Churchill Downs. Other winners - Sunny's Halo, Carry Black, Swaps, and Broker's Tip - are all interred at the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is located adjacent to the race track.

I used to show my Tennessee Walker in western pleasure and English. While at one of the shows, a horse was kicked by another resulting in a broken leg. The vet came on the grounds and euthaniazed the horse right in the trailer. That was my last show!

Oh, what a heartbreaking thing that must have been.  I know they really did try hard to save Barbaro, they certainly did want to prevent euthanizing him.

He was such a fighter and so courageous.  I can think of nothing more fitting for his final resting place.Smile

I think it's the perfect place for his resting place.  I'll bet you the memorial/statue will be as majestic as he was.

I think it does, too. I can't think of a better place or a better way.
